"Life's not a Dress Rehearsal." Most days we end up just going through the motions. Some say like an actress going through the motions – holding back – only allowing the energy to shine on performance night. As homeschooling moms we may only 'perform' when in the presence of other homeschooling families. These outside events tend to bring out the best in our performance. Are you a hand, or a foot, or the eyes? What are your gifts and your personality type? Where do you shine? Maybe when you are together with other moms you put your best forward and create a bulletin board for a co-op class, or share tea with real china. My daughter drew flowers and leaves while she was outside this afternoon. I asked her why she chose to draw this on an old sheet of paper instead of taking her drawing journal out with her. "That's only for special things," she replied. I understood, how many things do I save for 'something special'. I tried to convince her this drawing was special, it was what she saw today. The magic of performance night is the props, knowing the audience is watching, dressing up in costumes. The leading lady taps into this excitement and shines on stage. What does this mean for our ordinary day? Do we need to put this pressure on ourselves each day and perform? No. But, we can tap into this excitement more frequently. Try simple activities to make your school time special. Each special moment takes out the drudgery and helps the day to shine. Bring out the good china on tea days, set schoolwork table the night before with freshly sharpened pencils and set the stage for the day, any small detail can help us live real life today and help us to shine.
