Ask just about anyone how much sleep a person needs to function and you'll probably hear the same thing... eight hours. Never mind the fact that new mothers deal with sleepless nights and still find a way to take care of the housework that needs to be done, cook meals and have them ready for us when we get home from work, and teach the rest of the children their lessons.

I learned a while ago that if it's important you can find a way to get it done.

When my youngest daughter arrived I spent the night in my wife's hospital room with my rear on a chair and my head on the foot of the bed. Not exactly the way to get a good night's sleep. At three in the morning I found myself in the cafeteria, half conscious, with a cup of stale coffee in my hands.

But then she arrived. And you know what. I didn't remember being tired anymore. I just remember wanting to see her all the time.

If it's important, lesser priorities don't matter as much.

If my child's education is important to me, I'll skip one television show I love to help them understand a concept that could help them in life. I'll stay awake just 15 minutes more every night reading a book that helps me be a better father. I'll get up an hour early, chug a bunch of coffee, and sit down with the schoolwork my child is having trouble with, so I can figure out how to help her understand it.

Will I be tired? Yeah. Will I want to crawl back into that warm, cosy bed for just a little more sleep? Yeah. But if it's worth it, I'll just do it.

It's like I jokingly tell my wife when she worries that I'm not getting enough sleep... Aw, I can sleep when I'm dead.
