My kids have no idea it's happening, but I'm the pop quiz instructor of our homeschool. As the primary wage earner in the family I spend way more time than I think anyone should have to work, just to pay the bills. As a self employed individual, the amount of time I spend earning money is even bigger because when I'm done with the day's work I need to advertise and find new clients, take care of bookkeeping, etc, etc, etc. I spend time at night and during quiet meals with my wife finding out how the kids are doing with their homeschooling. If I find something that one of the children just doesn't quite have down pat, I step into my phone booth and become... Homeschool Pop Quiz Instructor! I might drill one child on her multiplication tables. Going over them again and again until she can fire answers back at me without any hestation. I may ask science questions of the kids. I try to simply appear inquisitive. Just kind of wondering about this world we live in (after all that's what we want our children to do, right?). I might challenge them with a question that I know they don't have the answer to and when they reply, "I don't know," encourage them to look it up and give me the answer in the morning. I try to make this pop quiz time fun for the children. After all, learning is challenging, but it can be a whole lot of fun too. If I can help one of the children have fun learning things or help another master something they're struggling with I can feel good about contributing something to our homeschool. I will never be able to have as big an investment in our children as my wife can, but if I can make a couple key contributions, I can feel good about myself, and I can sleep well knowing the Augustine homeschool is once again safe.
